![]() I sighed, because they should at least be well versed in their competition. That advertising is a gamble, and no platforms could promise me conversions. When I told her this, she said I was too caught up on specifics. Because if Baby Shower Paint Parties are trending I could start to offer these parties and put them front and center on my website to maximize conversions. If they were forthcoming with this information it would be super valuable. So I may be trending for art supplies and cupcake parties (neither of which we do) and I’d never know. But without knowing what keywords they choose. This way you can be found multiple ways that we see fit. To this they say: we’re better than Google because we do not limit your keywords. Or if I’m appearing in irrelevant searches like hair salons or tattoo shops. I have such little competition I shouldn’t show up on page 2, or at the bottom of a list of several other locations unless their algorithm is placing non galleries ahead of actual galleries. Which was odd because I’m one of 5 actual galleries listed, if these were relevant searches than I should have closer to 25% of that 4,000 (1000 clicks). She went on to say that I appeared 4,000 times and was only clicked 240 of those times. What percentage of these clicks were real? In fact it could be hurtful to my hard-work I put into ranking on Google. So having that representative cheerfully tell me about a click that was 80% likely to be a bot or miss-click, was not good news. This isn’t even vaguely new, nor exclusive to Google. In order to protect their users from getting bad search results if they see that most people who visit your site leave immediately they drop you down in their rankings because you must not have the results people are looking for. In a previous life maybe, but now Google tracks not only the number of times your site is accessed but how long they stay (bounce rate). ![]() What’s wrong with miss-clicks? Don’t you want the most clicks possible? In fact that’s the number one selling point my Yelp representative was pushing. Which means I cut out a lot of miss-clicks to my site. On Google I can indicate that if they use the word salon, hair, or shampoo while searching for me that I won’t appear. My gallery has a name that is popular with hair salons internationally. On Google I get to select keywords as well as “anti-keywords” (my terminology). “Don’t you think you need to be seen by people who are further out than 5 miles from your business?” Was her cheerful but obviously snide remark to my real question on why would anyone in California be searching for my gallery. Just that I should be excited to be seen. What was worse was she couldn’t tell me how this person found me. Which would be great if it wasn’t for a local gallery in North Carolina. On my call the representative excitedly told me that a woman from California clicked through to my website. You can’t really tell what is a bot versus what is a real quality click. ![]() The big reason why is because these metrics give you numbers but don’t tell you why they clicked. These metrics are comparable to Google My Business (which is also important for any business to be listed on) but do not touch Google Analytics, or other free SEO platforms like Woorank, SEMRush etc. Where you can see how many searches you appeared in versus who clicked and then who went on to click on your website, call, or grab directions. Now they have a backend, with some metrics. The reason: Yelp provides no real insight on who is seeing your business and why. Without a massive budget and a willingness to take risk. When it comes to advertising with Yelp I’m not convinced anyone should. So I will always advise you to get listed. It can help increase your visibility online and you want to show up on Maps with curated photos, Yelp coupons/deals, and as you grow you want to showcase a glowing trail of positive reviews. Now Yelp is a great place to list your business for free. They’re often on the first 3 lines of any search results, and most people look to Yelp for finding new businesses and their reviews.Īctually, I would edit that last sentence to “most people look to Yelp for finding new RESTAURANTS and their reviews.” Not necessarily all businesses. It’s one of the most trafficked sites, they’ve linked up with Apple and now provide the reviews and photos you see on Maps. Outside of the constant “high energy” sales pitch calls every quarter Yelp has some real issues for businesses looking for quality advertising platforms.
